Classic Cheeseburgers

  • Author: ThinkBeef
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 11 minutes
  • Total Time: 26 minutes
  • Yield: Serves 4

Ingredients

Scale

1 large egg

Half small onion, grated

¼ tsp (1 mL) EACH salt and pepper

1 lb (500 g) Medium or Lean Ground Beef

3 tbsp (45 mL) dry bread crumbs or quick-cooking rolled oats

8 slices good-quality Cheddar cheese

4 hamburger buns, split

Toppings (as desired)

4 slices bacon, cooked and broken in half

Sliced tomatoes, onion and pickles

Lettuce leaves

Condiments (ketchup, mustard, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Combine egg, onion, salt and pepper with a fork in a large bowl. Gently mix in ground beef and bread crumbs with a fork (careful not to over-mix). Gently form into four ½-inch (2 cm) thick patties. Press a dimple into the centre of each patty.
  2. Grill patties in a closed preheated barbecue over medium-high heat (400°F/200°C) for about 10 minutes, turning twice or more, until a digital instant-read thermometer inserted sideways into centre of each patty reads 160°F (71°C). Top each patty with cheese, close lid and cook for 1 minute to melt.
  3. Meanwhile, toast buns, if desired. Place patties on bun bottoms, top with bacon, tomatoes, onion, pickles and lettuce (if using) and desired condiments, then bun tops.

To pan-fry: Heat a thin layer of oil over medium-high heat in a large nonstick skillet or grill pan. Pan-fry patties, in batches as necessary to avoid crowding, for about 10 minutes, turning twice or more, until a digital instant-read thermometer inserted sideways into centre of each patty reads 160°F (71°C). Top each patty with cheese, cover pan and cook for 1 minute to melt.

To air-fry: Place beef patties in the air fryer basket, leaving space between each (in batches as necessary). Set temperature to 400°F (200°C) and set time for 10 minutes. Cook burgers, until a digital instant-read thermometer inserted sideways into centre of each patty reads 160°F (71°C). Top each patty with cheese, close air fryer (turned off) and let melt for about 1 minute.

Notes

Tip: Pressing a dimple into the patties prevents them from puffing up when grilling giving you an evenly-cooked and shaped, picture-perfect burger patty.
